Student

Being a student is a tremendous opportunity to explore your subject area for yourself. Whether your chosen field is science, philosophy or theology, you now have perhaps the best opportunity of your life not only to increase your knowledge base but also to think about how your studies relate to the bigger picture of human enquiry.

Much of what we study must be taken on trust. Astronomy students don’t need to re-calculate the distance between the earth and the sun, and biology students can likewise assume that the structure of the DNA double helix has been conclusively demonstrated. On the other hand, if the entire current consensus in any given field is always uncritically accepted on the authority of others then knowledge would never advance. Breakthroughs happen when the consensus is questioned.

You will readily find apparently authoritative voices dismissing Intelligent Design as ‘not science’, ‘poor theology’, ‘akin to believing in a flat earth’, ‘god-of-the-gaps’ and so on. Yet you will rarely find such critics engaging with what proponents of ID actually say and write. So we invite you to use the resources of this website to discover for yourself the best case in favour of ID, first-hand in the words of its advocates rather than second-hand through the lenses of its opponents.

Until a few decades ago the accepted scientific consensus was that the universe had always existed. When evidence began to point instead to a finite beginning, that conclusion was initially resisted on the grounds that it sounded too religious. But the case for a finite beginning eventually gained wide acceptance on the basis of the evidence itself. We believe that the various design arguments advanced on this website will similarly win the day.
